WHAT IS A LIFE GROUP?
Sharing Life Together
Because there is much confusion today over the concept of “community” in the church, it is important that we specifically define what a “Life Group” is at Olive Drive Church.
What a Life Group isn’t:
Sometimes it’s helpful when defining Life Groups to begin by describing what they aren’t. The following are common misperceptions about Life Groups:
- A Life Group is not a Free Market Group…
- A Life Group is not a Sunday School class…
- A Life Group is not a one on one friendship…
- A Life Group is not a scripted program to be completed…
and…
- A Life Group is not simply a Bible study…
- A Life Group is not simply a fellowship group…
- A Life Group is not simply a prayer group…
- A Life Group is not simply an accountability group…
- A Life Group is not simply a service group…
What a Life Group is:
Life Groups are small groups of people sharing life together with the aim of growing spiritually through authentic relationships.
At ODC, we desire to cultivate communities on a mission. Life Groups are the heartbeat of our church and serve as the primary setting for members to grow spiritually as they seek to live out the core values of ODC. A Life Group consists of 6-12 adults who are meeting together regularly, continually encouraging one another to mature in their faith, and serving to meet each other’s needs. In Life Groups we experience care and accountability in the context of authentic relationships.
A Life Group seeks to be a balance of the following five areas:
- Bible Study
- Fellowship
- Prayer
- Accountability
- Service
Life Group leaders are trained to assess what the needs of the group are, and which of the five areas to emphasize as he or she seeks to lead and facilitate a safe environment that is fostering spiritual growth in each member of the group.
